SM bats? Never heard of them?

By , May 13, 2016 12:08 pm

sm choice of championsIt might surprise you to find that SM is part of a long established family owned traditional bat making dynasty which traces its’ roots back to a company called BDM.

BDM was named after the grandfather of Uday Mahajan (whose company is SM) BDM being the initials of “Mr. Banarsi Das Mahajan” who passed away a few years ago.

Banarsi Das Mahajan was born in Sialkot (Pakistan) and there he started manufacturing cricket bats in 1925 under the name of Mahajan Sports along with his two brothers. Following the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, Banarsi Das Mahajan moved to the city which is now the base for SM, Meerut in India and restarted the same business.

In 1967 he independently launched his own brand “BDM”.

At this point, Banarsi Das Mahajan had three sons and three daughters. His middle son was Sunil Mahajan (nicknamed ‘PINTU’). At a very early age, straight after school, Sunil Mahajan started helping his father in the business, especially as his two brothers had no interest in the business.

Banarsi Das Mahajan was a hard working, self-made and most importantly, a very honest human being, and Sunil Mahajan followed in the same footsteps. Over time, the BDM brand started becoming more successful, and Banarsi Das Mahajan slowly and happily handed over his responsibilities to his son, Sunil Mahajan, knowing that he was handling things the same way.

When the business started expanding, Sunil’s brothers also started showing interest in the business and started insisting that their father let them join too.

From there onwards, Sunil Mahajan became the leading figure in the family and the main decision maker in the business. From there, the growth of BDM started in earnest, with Sunil Mahajan making contact with all the cricketers and the buyers with a positive attitude, a smile, and a lot of hard work.

Eventually, BDM became the number one cricket bat and the most talked about brand in India and throughout the world. It maintained its reputation for quality and as market leader for almost two decades.

In 2001, Sunil’s son, Uday Mahajan had gone to Sydney, Australia and graduated in Business Administration in 2005 and started his Masters’ degree in International Business. Sadly, this co-incided with his father being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and so Uday Mahajan returned home, and decided not to return to Australia, joining the family business instead. Eighteen months later, Sunil Mahajan sadly passed away.

Other members of the family left the business and Banarsi Das Mahajan handed over control of the company to his grandson, Uday Mahajan who worked hard to gain experience and maintain the reputation of BDM.

Over a period of four years, Uday Mahajan built up the business, sponsoring national and international players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, M.S. Dhoni, T.M. Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Younis Khan, and other domestic Indian players. With the continuing support of his grandparents and in particular, his mother, Uday Mahajan maintained the traditions and reputation of BDM.

Although other members of the family were still involved, the BDM business no longer had the same leading role in the world of cricket, with increased competition and a changing market, and reached a point under Uday Mahajan’s leadership where it needed a new vision and a new focus. After much planning, a new brand “SM” was established in June 2009, which was named after “Sunil Mahajan” with his nick name “Pintu” also registered as a co-brand of SM – as Uday’s father was famous in the cricket fraternity amongst the buyers, players, and anyone who is related to cricket globally who all knew the name of Sunil Mahajan. To support the launch of the brand, a new company, Sunil Mahajan & Sons Sporting Private Limited was formed.

Trading in the SM brand started from October’ 2009 onwards and instantly received an extraordinary response from the market. SM was welcomed in the market due to the goodwill associated with the name of Sunil Mahajan as well as the support of the former BDM employees who had worked as part of the BDM and SM family, for many years.

In two and a half years the company established SM in India and then started to expand in export markets. The company now has two factories and is expanding further with continued construction going on to date.

It is worth noting incidentally that SM launched the brand with the support of Sachin Tendulkar who promoted SM on his helmet, primarily as he had been very close to Sunil Mahajan and is still close to Uday Mahajan.

There is still a long way to go for SM, but the journey which was started with BDM, is now continuing into the twenty first century.

Uday Mahajan pays tribute to his father and grandfather, as well as the continuing support of his mother, and respects a tradition of bat making which can be traced back to the middle of the last century, which is being maintained within SM.

SM bats?

A family business with ethics and craftsman made quality products at its’ heart.

If, by any chance, you happen to meet any Indian who is actively involved in cricket in anyway, regardless of a player of the stature of Sachin Tendulkar or Virender Sehwag, all you have to do is mention the name of Sunil Mahajan (or his nickname, Pintu) and the person you are talking to, will instantly know about his passion for cricket and his genuine attitude towards the business. That is the legacy and the strength of SM.

By , September 23, 2015 9:52 am

Middlesex’s Cath Dalton joins 13 other Ireland Women in La Manga as they train for the ICC World T20 Qualifiers in Thailand.

Cath, who recently made headlines while playing for Halstead CC for being the first woman to score a century in the two counties championship, will train indoors for a month before leaving to Spain at the end of October.

Cath is one of two new additions to the Ireland squad. Chair of Selectors Rob O’Connor said: “It’s very exciting to be able to add a player of Cath’s experience and ability to our squad. With an average of more than 40 for Middlesex in limited overs cricket we believe she can be a valuable addition to our top order.”

Ian Anderson, Managing Director of sponsors Cricket Deal Direct, said: “Cath continues to excel, proving that she is a world class cricketer. Playing for Ireland will give her valuable experience on the international stage.”

“Bringing Cath into the squad will add much needed competition for places and will ultimately raise the standard of women’s cricket in Ireland,” said O’Connor.

Cricket Deal Direct sponsors Cath who has used SM gear for several years now. Cath is currently performing with the popular SM Players Pride English Willow Grade 1 bat but we expect her to try out the new blades from our Heather Knight Collection range very soon.

Nearly 1000 runs scored in Virgin’s soldiering season

By , September 18, 2015 12:46 pm

SM brand equipped Matt Virgin’s outstanding season for Grendon & Prims CC was down to increased confidence and his SM Soldier Plus English Willow bat, used for the first time in 2015’s season.Virgin

A brutal batsman, Matt’s speciality is punishing bad balls with his SM Soldier Plus, and punishing them well. “My grandfather has always said it was my strength,” said Matt, “for if the ball was in my ‘arc’ as such, then there’s a good chance it’s going to  be a six.”

Matt’s powerful performances are part of what has led to Grendon and Prims CC being promoted – as their captain, he clearly sets a good example.

“This season my confidence was at its highest, and I dispatched the first ball of my innings for 6 on two occasions.”

“In Early 2015 I went to pick up my new bat and it looked fantastic,” said Matt, “it felt fantastic – and most importantly – the ball absolutely flies off it! This season I hit 21 6’s and 156 4’s – which I think speaks volumes about the SM Soldier Plus bat.”

“It took me a little while to get used to it, I had no idea what to expect…” said Matt, “but my goodness once I was used to it that was it – it went like a bullet!

“Matt’s love for SM bats is something we’ve definitely noticed,” said Cricket Deal Direct managing director Ian Anderson, “we’ve supplied him with several SM bats before, and he clearly likes them. He really demonstrates what our SM bats can do.”

Matt, 23 year old from Northampton, has cricket in his blood from his Grandfather Roy Virgin, previously a professional for Northants and Somerset, while his Uncle was also previously captain for the club.

The club has a strong family ethos, as well as performing well: Virgin’s uncle previously captained Grendon & Prims, and his grandmother provides teas every home game – with his fiancée doing the scoring.
