A great summer of women’s cricket – Spotlight on Scotland

England Women may have taken all the plaudits with their stunning World Cup victory, and the Kia Super League is about to get underway for the second time, but let’s not forget all the great successes north of the border where Cricket Deal Direct is proud to include Scotland Women’s captain, Abbi Aitken, as an SM Ambasador.

Abbi has been playing for Carlton CC in Edinburgh this summer when Scotland commitments permit. Carlton Women have recently won the Cricket Deal Direct Womens Premier League so that’s been a great highlight of Abbi’s summer already.

Scotland Women had the Global World Cup Qualifiers earlier in the year (February) out in Sri Lanka. Whilst they didn’t qualify for the World Cup it was a fantastic experience for the squad, to test themselves against some tough and well drilled opponents. Scotland had South Africa in their group so as Abbi says, “It’s pretty cool to say we challenged ourselves – and definitely were able to walk off the pitch with our heads held high – against the 2017 World Cup semi-finalists! After Sri Lanka the squad had a few weeks rest before resuming their preparations for the summer season”.

The Scotland Wildcats (the ECB County Squad) have been competing in Division 2 of the ECB County T20 Cup where they are currently sitting in mid table in 4th place. The Wildcats have two games to go against Notts and Essex Women who are currently sitting top and bottom of the league table respectively. As Scotland won promotion to Division 2 last year, their aim was always to cement their place in division 2 this season so hopefully they can achieve that after the last rounds of the T20.

Scotland Women have a very packed August ahead. Tuesday 1st to Friday 4th August, they had a series (Celtic Cup) against Ireland Women in Dundee, Scotland. The series consisted of 1 x 50 over game and 3 x T20s, which Ireland took with 3 from 3. Ireland are a familiar opponent for the Scots so it was a good week of cricket with a new look Scottish squad who tested themselves against a strong and experienced Ireland side.

After the Celtic Cup, Scotland Women have the ICC Women’s T20 Qualifier – Euro/Americas. This is taking place in Stirling, Scotland from the 14th to the 18th August. This tournament is the regional qualifier for the Global T20 Qualifier which takes place in the first half of 2018 (the ICC yet to announce the date and location) which ultimately leads on to the Women’s T20 World Cup taking place in November in West Indies.

In short, Scotland have to progress through the Euros/Americas qualifier, and then the Global qualifier to be in with a chance of reaching their first ever World Cup. Tough ask but they will be focussing on the Euro/Americas qualifier coming up first of all. Scotland, USA and Netherlands are competing in the tournament and each play against each other twice throughout the week. The top 2 teams progress through to the Global Qualifiers.

C’mon Scotland!
